Iama Primary Health Care Centre (PHCC) is managed by a small primary health care team consisting of a remote area nurse, two Indigenous health workers and ancillary staff.
This health centre offers a limited range of primary health and emergency care services, including chronic disease, maternal and child care, lifestyle and emotional well-being, environmental health and mental health. Can provide some support for persons at the end of life. The nearest referral service to Iama is Thursday Island Hospital.
Allied Health outreach teams (oral health, podiatry, dietician, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, diabetes educator) visit the island regularly and midwives also attend on an as-needed basis for antenatal checks.
Men’s and women’s health clinics are also available on a regular basis through the Royal Flying Doctor Service, and Queensland Health provides a number of fly-in, fly-out specialist services including an optometrist. Telehealth services are available for linking with other facilities via video-conferencing.
