Erub (Darnley Island) is part of the eastern cluster of the Torres Strait Islands. The population is approximately 328 people, with 96% of the population being of Torres Strait Islander descent. Erub Primary Health Care Centre (PHCC) is managed by a small team consisting of remote area nurses, Indigenous health workers and ancillary staff. Palliative care support to persons at the end of life can be provided (limited). The PHCC is also responsible for the provision of services on Ugar (Stephen Island) and Mer (Murray Island). This health centre is open daily with a nurse available after hours for emergencies. It provides primary health services such as disease prevention and health promotion and a doctor visits the centre every three to four weeks for two days. All allied health services except dentistry and podiatry visit the PHCC with most services visiting every two to three months. However, a midwife visits monthly and a renal team from Brisbane visits once a year. Telehealth services are available to give residents access to specialist services without having to leave their local community.
